Global payroll objectives are becoming more strategic

There is a growing trend inside global organisations who are now looking at the global payroll department from a more strategic perspective. While the traditional aspect of global payroll delivery and management has focused on timely and accurate pay for the international workforce, this business-critical function is now evolving in line with broader business objectives.

What this means for the global payroll department is something of an evolution beyond its traditional role into a strategic asset that has the capability to influence decision making at executive and C-Suite level. In this article, we will look at a few of the areas in which global payroll processing is evolving.

Stakeholder Experience

Multicountry payroll delivery and management has a broad footprint across an international organisation-many stakeholders are impacted by payroll, so it is not simply about an end of month paycheck for employees.

Payroll plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with financial regulations & local country labor laws. It is crucial that everything is done correctly from a local and global compliance perspective. Any failure in this area can result in significant financial penalties as well as reputational damage. Key stakeholders across compliance ad governance therefore have a keen interest in the protocols and controls in place to ensure compliance accuracy.

The human resources department also needs access to complete picture reporting which includes detailed workforce information as well as global payroll data and metrics. This information is vital when it comes to understanding the nature and makeup of the global workforce.

Finance teams also require global payroll data so that they can drill down into specific pay elements such as tax, pension, commission and bonuses. This is the kind of data they need when forming opinions around cost management initiatives.

Embracing Technology

The integration of technology in payroll operations is essential for creating value and driving strategic decisions. Modern payroll software automates processes, improves accuracy, and enables seamless data exchange between payroll functions and multiple interested parties such as human resources, finance and information security.

Payroll, today, is evolving from a transactional function to a valuable strategic asset shaping an enterprise’s workforce strategy.

Organisations are therefore looking to invest in technology stacks that deliver strategic value to the payroll department, especially when it comes to the consolidation and extraction of crucial global payroll and workforce management data. Embracing technology such as integration as a service tools, which can connect the ecosystem surrounding global payroll is an important strategic step that many organisations are looking into today.

Real-Time Data for Informed Strategies

Payroll data is needed for global & local strategic decision-making and leadership teams at global organisations are voicing their frustrations around their inability to access the data they need to make strategic corporate decisions. In a recent report by the Everest Group, they stated.

Nearly 45% of leaders lack global visibility into payroll operations, hindering strategic decision-making.

You cannot become strategic if you don't have the access to the data you need for informed decision making. In order for payroll departments to become strategic assets, they must be equipped with next generation technology that can help create the level of visibility and control across payroll operations that support instead of hinder strategic decision making at executive level. With the right technology in place, payroll data can provide valuable insights for strategic decision-making by offering operational statistics, identifying trends, and supporting critical business decisions around workforce expansion and cost management.

Moving Away from Fragmented Solutions

Transitioning from transactional to strategic payroll involves aligning payroll objectives with overall business goals. One such business goal might be digital transformation- an example of this would be integrating global payroll with related department such as HR and finance as well as introducing AI powered automation to replace excel spreadsheets and manual work.

Multinational firms across sectors increasingly recognize that legacy payroll operating models lack the resiliency, flexibility, and modern infrastructure required to support strategic plans at leadership level. The nature of many global payroll operations is to leverage a patchwork of solutions that don’t feature any standardization, workflow automation, or integration. A lot of disconnected systems that don't talk to each other and operate in silos.

The shift towards global payroll becoming more strategic will therefore necessitate an investment in global payroll solutions that connect the wider ecosystem, dispense with fragmented solutions and replace them with first citizen technology featuring automation and integration tools that can elevate payroll from its cost-center tradition to that of a trusted strategic partner and strategic value enabler of the business.

Prioritizing Payroll Wellbeing

Another strategic objective in relation to payroll is to prioritise payroll wellbeing as part of an overall strategy that is focused on employee satisfaction and retention. Employees today bring with them digital expectations from their personal lives where they have instant access to data and information-they expect similar levels of access when it comes to their payslips and tax information.

Investing in a positive payroll experience not only boosts employee morale but also contributes to fostering loyalty within the workforce. This emphasis on employee satisfaction aligns with broader organizational objectives of talent retention and engagement.

A young and engaged global workforce needs to feel like they're working for a digitally savvy organisation. This cannot be achieved if they have to e-mail HR for access to their payslips and wait several days for a response. It is a far more positive employee experience to give them 24/7 access to their payslips and tax information via a digital employee hub. It is also important from an organisational perspective that the employee payroll experience is unified, i.e. the experience is the same regardless of location.

Payroll goes far beyond basic employee compensation- and the diverse and changing nature of the global workforce as well as the digital expectations of international employees means that there is a real need for global payroll objectives to become more strategic in nature. This will enable a range of different business stakeholders to benefit from this business-critical service.

Evolving into a more strategic partner will also help with the business case for investments in global payroll technology solutions which are definitely required if the desire is for payroll to become more strategic. Such technology will also have an important role to play in broader strategic objectives of organisations especially when it comes to compliance, governance and data security.
